I always enjoy unexpectedly finding old things I’d forgotten. This morning I was looking for a transcript to send to UNCG to get the graduate process started and my favorite hats that I haven’t been able to find for months. Instead, I stumbled upon these two poems that I wrote sometime last year. So now I’m going to leave them here so I don’t forget them again. When I first wrote them, I couldn’t stand them (as always). But on second read, they’re not too terrible.
Where the Dragons Sleep
From the woods outside our keep comes a chorus of gnashing teeth,
A horde of ruthless, dagger wielding enemies
Set out to steal what is only held between you and me.
They ache to take a bite of our hearts and beat their champion chests-
For a dragon slayer is the strongest, bravest, the land’s utmost best.
Time and trial again the quest has proven to be a fool’s errand-
"These sly and ancient creatures can sense every inch of their den."
"Invade them and be met with claws and swallowed in fire."
"There’s never really any taming those who never tire!"
These the finals breaths of wicked men aiming to snuff out our lives,
In pursuit of land, riches, all the makings of days over rife.
Heed these words, for the beasts won’t mind making you weep
If you dare to creep where the dragons sleep.
Alone in the night, I call the moon to be my guide
Her observance, “You are known to be as the tide;
Coming and going, rising and sinking, rarely staying still.
Accepting all, but requiring that they bend to your will.
Oh, simple man, you ebb and flow, roll and crash-
Swaying whatever’s in your grasp, forward and back.
Study your ways and you’ll find a simple pattern.
Your actions are foreseeable; your mood is an entirely different matter.
I urge you to accept the current, don’t surge too fast-
You’ll bury the present in your wake running from the past.
But listen to my song, find a map in my silent voice.
Live more with each breath, with every moment rejoice!
And remember, this will not be the last place you ever see.
You never know where tomorrow will call you to be.
